As Mombasa United prepare for a new chapter, Club President Abdulrahman Hussein sits down to reflect on the journey so far, the responsibility of representing Mombasa and the long-term ambition behind the club.

Known to many as Anzafresh, a name that speaks to a new beginning and a new chapter, the President believes that same idea captures the direction Mombasa United is taking today.

From building stronger foundations to creating a club the city can truly call its own, he discusses the bigger picture behind Mombasa United.

When you look at Mombasa United today, what makes you most proud?

President Abdulrahman Hussein:

The progress.

We started with a vision of building a club that truly represents Mombasa, and every season we are moving closer to that vision.

What makes me proud is seeing the club continue to grow, both on and off the pitch. But we also understand that there is still a lot of work ahead of us.

We are only getting started.

You are widely known as “Anzafresh”, a name associated with a new beginning and a new chapter. Does that idea reflect what you are trying to build at Mombasa United?

Absolutely.

For me, it represents moving forward, starting with fresh energy and believing that something better can be built.

That is also how I see this period for Mombasa United.

We respect the journey that has brought us here, but we are also creating a new chapter for the club, one built on stronger foundations, professionalism, ambition and a deeper connection with the people of Mombasa.

We want people to look at Mombasa United and feel that something new is happening.

A new beginning, but with a very clear purpose.

What does representing Mombasa mean to you?

It is a responsibility.

Mombasa has incredible football talent, passionate supporters and a very strong identity. When our players wear this badge, they are representing much more than a football club.

They are representing a city, its people and its pride.

We want Mombasa United to become a club that people across Mombasa and the entire Coast are proud to call their own.

The club is preparing for the 2026/27 SportPesa League season. What are your expectations?

We want to compete.

We respect every opponent, but we also have our own ambitions.

We have strengthened the technical team, we are building the squad and we are working to create the right environment for our players to perform.

Our responsibility as a club is to give the technical team and the players the strongest possible platform to succeed.

Supporters are seeing changes beyond the pitch as well. Why is that important?

Because a strong football club cannot only be about 90 minutes on a Saturday.

There has to be a strong structure behind the team. There has to be professionalism, player development, good facilities, commercial growth and a genuine relationship with supporters and the community.

These things do not happen overnight.

We are building them step by step because we want the progress of Mombasa United to be sustainable.

How important are the people of Mombasa to this project?

They are at the heart of it.

Ultimately, we want people in Mombasa to feel that this is their club.

We want children growing up here to see the Mombasa United badge and dream of one day wearing it. We want families looking forward to matchday. We want supporters wearing our colours proudly wherever they go.

A football club becomes truly special when there is a genuine connection between the team and the people it represents.

That is what we want to build here.

Where do you want Mombasa United to be five years from now?

We want Mombasa United competing at the highest level possible and operating as one of the most professional football clubs in the country.

But our ambition goes beyond where we finish in the league.

We want strong foundations. We want to develop players. We want to grow our supporter base, strengthen our commercial partnerships and build an institution capable of succeeding for many years.

Results will always matter.

But the bigger picture is building a football club that can represent Mombasa for generations.

Finally, what is your message to the Mombasa United supporters?

Believe in what we are building.

There will be challenges along the way and there will be great moments, but we want our supporters with us throughout that journey.

Everything we are building becomes stronger when the city stands behind the club.

This is Mombasa’s club.

And this journey is only beginning.
