Eleven Years On: Mombasa United Renew Acquaintances with Kakamega Homeboyz

Eleven years ago, Kakamega Homeboyz travelled to the Coast and recorded a 3–0 victory over Modern Coast Rangers. On Tuesday, the two clubs' football histories cross again, this time on the Premier League stage.

The year was 2015, and both sides were competing in the second tier of Kenyan football.

On 23 May, Homeboyz secured a 3–0 away victory before completing the double with a 2–0 win in Kakamega on 22 August.

That August encounter remains the last recorded competitive meeting between the two football identities.

Eleven Years, A Different Story

For Kakamega Homeboyz, the 2015 season ended with promotion to the Premier League, where they would establish themselves over the following decade.

On the Coast, the journey continued through the Modern Coast Rangers and Mombasa Elite chapters before the emergence of Mombasa United.

Now, following the Sultans' historic promotion, the two football histories meet again in Kenya's top division.

A Reunion at Mbaraki

Tuesday's encounter offers Mombasa United an opportunity to begin a new chapter against familiar opposition from the history books.

For head coach Abdulhamid Moallin and his players, the challenge is no longer about reaching the Premier League. It is about competing in it.

Eleven years ago, Kakamega Homeboyz had the upper hand.

On Tuesday, a new generation of Sultans will have the opportunity to write a different story.
